Staying the Course

Lance Stays The Course Despite Two Crashes

Sticking with your plan can sometimes bring surprises out of the blue.  Some are helpful, some cause problems.

Who would expect to see Lance Armstrong on the ground, twice, both crashes caused by other riders.

In our business the price of coffee spiked this summer.  Not exactly out of the blue, but a surprise none-the-less.  All of us who own and operate and lead our own business must have the courage to just put our heads down and keep going forward.  You and I must be able to absorb disappointments, even when physically hurt, and keep going.  We are the energy that keeps the business healthy.

The news is reporting that Lance tweeted his intention to continue in the race and help his team-mates.  Good for him.  While winning is out of the question this year, he could still win some stages.

So let us leaders learn the easy way.  Watch another person handle adversity and thrive.

May your summer be happy, and your Gazpacho cold.

1st Objective or Goal of Any Buiness

John Travalta Staying AliveStaying Alive.  You’ve heard the song and if you are in business or going into business you know that rule number one is Staying In Business.

And if you can not pay bills like your mortgage, car payment, or you can’t go on vacation because you are worried about your business, then You Have To Change.

I like to say: ” We are where we are, and everything we did before this got us here“.  We are the sum of everything that came before.

So you know that if you are not what you want to be, or where you want to be, Something Has To Change.

At Kaffe Magnum Opus we have changed many times.  We went from stand-a-lone to inline mall store, to two stores, back to one store, then commercial roasting, new management, new banks, new roasting equipment, and lots more over 18 years.  The last change I made was to move out of active service and promote Robert Kraeuter to President.  I looked in the mirror and told the person in the mirror “we need a change”.

Lots more on the person in the mirror coming.
